The Book of Rules

FEATURE UPDATE! I have taken a long break from featuring picture books on my blog, Picture Books, Printables, and Play—OH MY! and I am finally ready to jump back into it! With perfect timing for BACK TO SCHOOL! This blog was created to give teachers, parents, and caregivers printables and activities that can be used as learning extensions after reading different picture books.

After looking back at some of my features, I have decided to revamp a few. The Book of Rules by Brian Gehrlein (Author), Tom Knight (Illustrator) has been a favorite of mine (and my kids) since I purchased it over a year ago. I am constantly telling my teacher friends this is the PERFECT back-to-school picture book! I wanted to create a few more printables for this amazing book, and offer another fun hands-on activity. I hope you and your kiddos enjoy this book and printables as much as my kids did!

With this new revamp, I will still offer a few FREE printables, but I will also share how to access my Teacher’s Pay Teacher’s store, Printables for Picture Books, to purchase and download more! Be sure to check out the 8 Worksheet BUNDLE for savings!

With kids back in school, I knew I needed to add this to the list as a fall feature. Every elementary teacher loves to start out the school year with a fun, engaging read aloud and this one IS that, plus RULES! What more could a teacher want?!

The Book of Rules asks children to follow rules 1-10 in order not to get eaten by the monster, Dennis! With some silly rules, like “Mooo like a cow” and “Make a fish face,” children are able to get their sillies out before it’s time to focus and follow instructions. With calmer rules to follow, like closing your eyes and deep breathing exercises, this book is the perfect balance of silly, interactive fun and learning to follow the rules. Will your child/ren get eaten by Dennis? :)

After reading this story, I hope your kiddos enjoy these printables and activities below.

As with every picture book, I also want to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.

For this hands-on activity, students will have fun creating their own monster with this guided printable!

This activity will work with a group of students taking turns, or as a quiet activity at one's desk. Provide the printable, drawing materials, extra paper and dice! Students will enjoy the fact that each monster will be unique!

Another idea for a hands-on activity related to this book:

Children can make their own BOOK OF RULES!

Depending on the children’s ages, help kidsdssafrz put together a book. All you need is 8X11 paper, and fold it in half. Again, based on the ages of the kids, depends on how many rules you want the children to create. I’d suggest maybe 5 rules, so a 10 page book. Staple the pages together on the folded edge. The children can write one rule on each page, and draw a picture associated to each rule.

Rules can be funny and silly, like “make a fish face” or more serious, like “close your eyes and take deep breaths.” If needed, create rules together as a class/home. But the possibilities for “rules” are endless.

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, The Book of Rules, the printables and hands-on activity!
