The Year We Learned to Fly
The second feature of February is here with The Year We Learned to Fly by Jacqueline Woodson (Author) and Rafael López (Illustrator).
I am so excited to share this beautiful story that inspires imagination with gorgeous story telling. With rich illustrations and a powerful message, this is one every home and classroom should have. This book will inspire many to imagine a better world.
When a brother and sister are stuck inside on a dreary day, bored and unsure what to do next, they use their grandmother’s advice to fly them out of boredom. As they come to various seasons of life, they continue to use this advice to escape into their imaginations. Their grandmother shares this advice comes from their own ancestors who showed the world the strength and resilience of their beautiful and brilliant minds.

As with every picture book, I also like to offer a fun hands-on activity as an extension of the book.
For this activity, children can think about what their brilliant minds are filled with. Examples: friendship, kindness, math, books, love, sports, hobbies, etc. Supply the kids with magazines or pictures that they can cut and paste into their own brilliant mind.
