Giraffe is Too Tall for This Book

I am SO excited to feature this next book, Giraffe is Too Tall for This Book by DK Ryland as the second book of March’s (I know it’s April… Shhhhh) Picture Books, Printables, and Play—OH MY!

I first heard this book through Storytime Sprint hosted by the lovely Ryann Jones and Andi Chitty. DK Ryland read it over Zoom to so many excited authors and friends. I LOVED it, and knew my kids would too. This story is fun and interactive, plus encourages problem-solving with friends.

When six friendly animals realize Giraffe isn’t fitting on the page, they are in quite the predicament and must figure out what they can do to get it right, WITH the reader’s help. Through laughs and encouragement, children will enjoy the engaging talking bubbles between the animals and reader, and gorgeous, bright illustrations!

This is a quick, entertaining read the whole family will love!

After reading this story, I hope your kiddos enjoy these FREE printables below.

This first printable is a simple coloring page featuring each of the characters from the book. Uh Oh! Where’s Giraffe’s head? When I showed this to my 6yo son, he said, “I think I will tape on another piece of paper and draw a head for giraffe.” :) Maybe your kiddos will come up with a problem solving idea for this as well (or they can just color as is!).

This next printable is a word find. Kiddos will find all of the characters in the story.

The third free printable is a Story Retell. Depending on the ages of the children completing this, you can have them write, draw or tell the adult the different parts of the story and the adult writes it in. Hint: The setting for this story is a book! :)

Here is a puzzle featuring the characters in the book. Kids are to cut and put back together as many times as they like.

As always, I love hands on activities that relate to the books! Since this book has an awesome message (without being didactic at all) of problem solving with others, I have thought of a few activities to do with your kiddos, depending on age group.

  1. Tupperware Madness!

Anyone have tons of different sized Tupperware in their home, with those pesky lids to go with them but you can never find the right lid with the right container when needed?! (hopefully not just me!) Well, here is the perfect game for your older todder to preschool age kiddo. Take ALL of them out- different sizes, different lids, maybe even some water bottles and their lids, and place them all on your table or living room floor. Tell your child they need to match each lid with the right container. Entertaining for them, and some organization for you! Great for their fine motor, problem solving, and spatial awareness!

  2. Fort Building + the Floor is Lava!

Kiddos and forts-they LOVE them! Without even realizing it, they are working on so many important skills- one being, problem solving! So with a few children, or YOU as the adult joining along— add in the mix of the floor being lava! The goal- make a super cool fort, however, with the floor being lava, they need a way to enter and leave the fort without touching the floor. Pillows, books, cushions to step on? Whatever it is! They will need to problem solve and communicate just like in our story!

  3. Build a Maze!

There are several ways this can be done! A life-size maze using chairs, tables, boxes, painters tape, etc.! OR driveway chalk or painters tape to make a maze big enough for little toy cars to go through. This will be a fun and exciting game for kids to use their problem solving skills to build their own mazes and/or get through them depending on age!

I hope your kiddos/students enjoy this story, Giraffe is Too Tall for this Book, the printables and play activities!
